Hurricane Florence
Staying Safe in Hurricane Weather
Protect Yourself
- Stock up on water; non-perishable foods that do not require cooking or refrigeration; and all medications needed to last everyone in
your house several days.
- Plan for a power outage: charge your cell phone, have flashlights, battery-powered radio, and extra batteries available.
- Avoid leaving your house or traveling.
- NEVER drive through a flooded roadway.
- If you live in a flood-prone area and/or there are limited routes to your home, consider staying with someone else over the weekend.
- Make sure you have flood insurance. If possible, park vehicles in a place away from potential damage, like a parking garage or higher ground.
- Keep your pets with you and avoid letting them outside. Make sure they have ID tags. If you have to leave them alone, make sure they have fresh water and food.
Monitor Mental Health
Make a mental health plan for the weekend. This can include plans to address your specific triggers and stressors, ways to distract and entertain yourself (such as a specific TV show or indoor activities), or people to call when feeling stressed. Talk to your Mental Health Care Coordinator for help identifying a plan for yourself.
Stay Connected
- Monitor the news (through TV, radio, or social media) to see what’s happening and hear warnings.
- Buddy up! Stay safely inside with someone you love. If this isn’t possible, identify a buddy you can call, and who can call you, in order to check on and support each other.
- Call one of the hotlines below if you need mental support or call 911 for any other emergency.
