What is anger?

Anger is a physiological response designed to protect us from real or perceived danger. It’s a temporary, multifaceted emotion involving both our mind and body. Anger varies in intensity, ranging from a mild annoyance to intense rage. While the exact triggers vary depending on the person or situation, anger is often rooted in one’s needs not being met.

What is Anger Management?

Anger management is a lifelong journey, similar to committing to a new diet or exercise routine. Embracing positive change through anger management can significantly enhance your life. It requires ongoing dedication, self-evaluation, and the daily action of healthy coping skills.

In an anger management program, individuals learn to be honest, purposeful, receptive, and direct in managing and expressing their emotions. This specialized training helps participants to identify anger triggers and provides healthier strategies for future situations. Key components of anger management include…

What’s the difference between healthy and unhealthy anger?

Healthy anger serves a purpose and provides supportive and constructive outcomes. It is balanced and matches the situation without being excessive or inadequate. Healthy anger allows for calm, responsible, and appropriate verbal expression of feelings and opinions, which enables individuals to eventually let go and move forward.

Unhealthy anger is destructive and can lead to harm, with intense expressions externally and internally. It often arises from intentions of punishment, revenge, destruction, or expressing hurt. Examples include verbal or physical violence/threats, property damage, passive aggression, self-harm, abuse, emotional suppression/withdrawal, or manipulation. Consequences often include damaged relationships, legal trouble, financial issues, and poor physical/mental health.
